Demos Two Thousand is a vinyl compilation collecting the legendary demos Shadow of No Light and Misanthropic Necro Blasphemy. Originally co-released on cassette by Oaken Throne and Blood Fire Death in 2005, this material is now available on vinyl for the first time. Includes the bonus track “Blood Red and True.”
Demos Two Thousand captures Leviathan at a formative stage, presenting a strong selection of recordings from the year 2000 that stands firmly on its own. The material reveals multiple facets of Wrest’s sound, with harsher, thrash-leaning passages alongside depressive and folk-tinged moments, trippy ambience, and subtle nods to classic Celtic Frost-era darkness filtered through a distinctly Leviathan lens. It serves as a broad snapshot of the project’s defining traits.
These recordings draw the listener deep into Leviathan’s isolated world, offering a well-rounded view of its core ideas. The sound quality ranges from rough to serviceable, clearly four-track demos, but the rawness works in the material’s favor, documenting early concepts and creative directions later refined elsewhere. Wrest’s abundance of ideas and refusal to conform are evident throughout.
Operating largely outside the scene, Leviathan’s outsider approach is strongly represented here, created during a period of near-total detachment from genre expectations. Rather than settling into stagnation, these demos showcase music made entirely on Wrest’s own terms. From stark, almost post-punk-like drum patterns to bleak, hallucinatory atmosphere, Demos Two Thousand maintains a gripping mood throughout, standing as an essential document of Leviathan’s early evolution.
